Mothers of Invention - Where is Performance coming from In the last years I also have become active in organising
and developing concepts for performance-related spaces. With two other
artists I ran a tiny non-profit performance space called Salon
Lady Chutney in Vienna for one year. The space started a new discussion
around performance and began to generate a network of artists working
with performance in and around Vienna. With the artist Carola Dertnig
I realised an exhibition called 'Let's
twist again-If you can't think it, dance it', where we paid
tribute to performers who have been working in Vienna since the 1970s
but have had little or no critical acclaim partly because of the overshadowing
reception of the male dominated 'Aktionisten' movement in Austria. We
wanted to question why and who had denied them adequate acknowledgement,
since many of the positions we showed are quite relevant to current strategies
and discourses pursued in art today. I see exhibition work as a complementary
artistic strategy, to actively influence what is subject to public reception,
i.e. what is regarded worthy of entering the discourses. A follow up to
this show with a broaderinternational focus was realized in MumoK, Vienna
in late 2003 and was entitled Mothers
of Invention - Where is Performance coming from ? |
